Disposing of old IT equipment is often a headache. How do you arrange this safely, sustainably and with a fair return? Circlewise shows that it can be done differently. More and more resellers and (public) organizations are discovering that circular IT not only saves CO₂ and helps comply with laws and regulations, but also generates value from IT hardware that would otherwise be discarded. We spoke with founder Arjan about his personal motivations, the power of his approach and why now is the time for resellers to offer a sustainable solution to their customers.
Arjan did not become an entrepreneur just to make sales. "I want to create something that makes a difference," he says. "During my career, I often saw how little attention there was to sustainability. Now that I have children of my own, it feels extra important: I want us not to deplete the world, but to leave it better."
Circlewise does not operate as a classic buyer, but as a service provider. Where many dealers buy up devices cheaply and resell them without transparency, Arjan opts for an open and value-driven model aimed at maximum return for the end customer. An approach that allows both the customer, the reseller and Circlewise to benefit from the higher residual value. Devices are collected, securely wiped, assessed and then sold to end users for the highest price, without middlemen.
"Our interest is exactly equal to that of the customer," says Arjan. "The higher the yield, the better for both parties." This makes Circlewise attractive to resellers who want to offer their customers a good story: not a low buyout price, but maximum value creation.
For many clients, especially in the public sector, data security is paramount. Circlewise uses ADISA-certified software to wipe data and provides an individual erasure certificate for each device. No generic bulk reports, but hard guarantees per device.
"That's not only nice for the customer, but essential for compliance," Arjan stresses. "During audits or tenders, you can prove exactly what happened to each piece of equipment. We make sure everything is correct, so customers can operate with confidence."
Trading in large numbers of used devices in the B2B market may sound simple, but in practice it is often complex. How do you know if you're getting the right price? How do you arrange logistics, diagnostics and reporting at scale? Circlewise is developing a user-friendly ecosystem for this, bringing together digital platforms, smart software and accurate grading.
Circlewise is PSO30-certified and actively engages people with a distance to the labor market. "Especially public organizations want to make their procurement not only more sustainable, but also more social," Arjan explains. "With us, they can achieve both at the same time. That makes it a strong story for resellers and their customers to take away."
In addition, reusing hardware yields an average CO₂ savings of 80 percent compared to buying new. Circlewise makes this transparent for each client with a CO₂ report, so that companies and organizations can not only feel their sustainability gains, but also demonstrate them in their own reports.
Circlewise offers customers their own portal where everything comes together: the registered devices, the wiki certificates, the CO₂ reports and the quality assessments. No chaos with separate documents or e-mails, just one well-organized place. Arjan finds that this very overview gives customers confidence and makes the process scalable, both for small and large customers.
According to Arjan, circular IT is fast becoming the norm. "This is not something for five years from now. It's playing out now. Companies and organizations that position themselves well now will soon have an edge."
For Ajan, it is especially valuable that he can connect his personal mission to business success. "I am proud that we help clients to make this a concrete reality. Not just because it's financially smart, but because it's good for the world. And I am glad that I am now no longer doing this alone, but together with more than ten committed colleagues who are committed to this mission every day."
Circular IT: a movement that continues to grow
The movement toward circular IT has long since ceased to be limited to a handful of forerunners. Governments, healthcare institutions, educational organizations and businesses are increasingly feeling the pressure to deal with their hardware in a smarter and more sustainable way. Companies like Circlewise make that step not only feasible, but also attractive. Those who step in now not only benefit from immediate value, but also build a future-proof strategy. The message is clear: circular IT is not hype, but a lasting change in how the industry looks at sustainability, value and responsibility.
This interview took place in the iconic Grasso building in 's-Hertogenbosch, which is also home to Circlewise. Arjan, founder of Circlewise, was interviewed by Robert, Community Manager of Grasso.
